What is estriol?

Estriol is a naturally occurring estrogen produced mainly during pregnancy, and is considered the weakest of the three human estrogens (estradiol, estrone and estriol). Because of its gentle estrogenic profile, estriol binds preferentially to tissues such as the vagina, vulva, urethra and lower urinary tract, and is often described as having a more "local" and protective effect with a weaker stimulatory impact on breast and endometrial tissue than estradiol.

When is estriol cream chosen?

Estriol-only cream is commonly prescribed for:

• Vaginal dryness and atrophy (genitourinary syndrome of menopause)
• Recurrent or bothersome urinary symptoms linked to low estrogen
• Mild hot flashes and night sweats
• Skin thinning and mucosal dryness related to estrogen decline
• A gentle estriol-only option when estradiol is not desired

Why transdermal?

Applied to the skin (or as directed to vaginal tissue), estriol is absorbed locally and into the circulation, bypassing first-pass liver metabolism. This allows the lowest effective dose to be used and reduced in small concentration steps — from 0.25 mg/ml, up to 12 mg/ml for stronger local support.

How to use

Apply the prescribed dose once daily (or as directed) to clean, dry, thin-skin areas — typically the inner wrists, upper inner arms, inner thighs or lower abdomen — rotating sites. When prescribed vaginally, follow your prescriber's specific instructions. Always attend follow-up reviews and blood work.
